After a morning run on the beach, we packed up and rode south toward the border of Panama. The jungle landscape was is so lush and green in this area of Costa Rica. We reached the border at 10:30 am, but were through in about an hour and a half. Not too bad…. we are now 3 hours ahead of home with another time change.
Drove to the town of David, then north to Boquete, Panama. Boquete is a beautiful town in the mountains – lots of coffee grown in this area. We were here one night several years ago with Ken and Dottie, so it’s fun to be back and be able to stay a little longer. We are so happy to see lower prices for everything in Panama compared to Costa Rica.

Spent the day enjoying Boquete and the surrounding area. The temperature is just about perfect here – 77 degrees…. 🙂

We decided to head to the Caribbean side of Panama today. The 4 hour ride was spectacular through the rainforest.
As we drove up into the mountains, we could see the Pacific Ocean. A few hours later, the Caribbean came into view. Stopped in the not-so-great-town of Almirante for the night. Chiquita (as in bananas!) ships most of their bananas from this area! We had Chinese food for dinner (it was actually very good – made by a Chinese man!). We boxed up our leftovers and handed them off to a group of little boys who were waiting expectantly outside the restaurant. One little guy had shined Scott’s shoes before dinner.
We were thinking of taking the ferry across to the Isle of Colon, Bocas del Toro, but decided to bypass it…. the ferry wasn’t going on Monday, all the hotels we contacted were full…. too many obstacles… So, back to Costa Rica tomorrow!

The border crossing from Panama to Costa Rica through Sixaola, was very quiet and easy. They have built a new vehicle bridge across the river right next to the old bridge. This made crossing on the bike no big deal. I had read that up until very recently, you had to take vehicles across on the old footbridge…. scary! Crossing the bridge, we gained an hour – time change. 🙂
We drove up to Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica, on the Caribbean. Scott is happy to see waves where he can body surf! It’s a quirky beach town…. and not too expensive compared to other areas of Costa Rica. We may stay here for a few weeks and take a break.
Discovered something fun tonight… jungle fireflies!!!! So amazing! We have heard a very strange sound at night from time to time, but wasn’t sure what it was… found out it is howler monkeys – they definitely “howl”!!!
